Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize winning play
OUR TOWN
The Schoolhouse Arts Center at Sebago Lake will present Thornton Wilder’s Our Town weekends March 12-28. Our Town is the day to day story of each of us "in our growing up, and in our marrying, and in our living, and in our dying." The play reaches deep into the heart of twentieth century American life. The ordinary becomes extraordinary as the people of Grover’s Corners show us the joy of living "every moment."
"It’s a little play with all the big subjects in it."--- Thornton Wilder in a letter to Gertrude Stein, 1937.
Local actor Keith Halliburton (right) leads the cast as The Stage Manager, who alternately takes the roles of narrator, philosophical druggist, parson, and social commentator. With insight and dry New England humor he guides the audience through the play. The charming cast of characters highlights Kate Downey and Ed Baldridge as the young lovers Emily Webb and George Gibb. Dennis Fontaine and Paula Suttle play Dr. and Mrs. Gibb. Raymond Long and Sharon Bearor portray Editor and Mrs. Webb. Rounding out the principal cast are Mike Millett as the choir director Simon Stimson, Sumida Sferes as the town gossip Mrs. Soames, Chip Burnham as Constable Warren, and Alex Davis as the milkman Howie Newsome. Bill Miller, Chris Dodge, and Gail Rich make cameo appearances. Members of the Schoolhouse Youth Theater Ensemble Nicole Avery and Marcus and Sam Bagala, as well as other local youth James Miller, Frank Gilcreast, and Chris Freeman play younger children, newspaper boys and ballplayers.
Our Town runs March 12-28, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 2PM. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students and seniors over 55. Call 207-642-3743 for reservations. An on-line reservation form will be available soon.
