As sweet as the heady fragrance of magnolias in springtime and as strong as
tempered steel, Robert Harling’s delightful play engages the audience in
the personal dramas of six Southern women. Director Linda Sturdivant brings
to the stage at Schoolhouse Arts Center Paula Gagne of Gorham as Truvy,
Katie Lippa of South Portland as Annelle, Sally Jones and Katie Lotitto of
Oxford Hills as Ouiser and Shelby, Jennifer Diekema of West Baldwin as
Clairee and Eileen Avery of Standish as M’Lynn.
Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana, is where the six women gossip and chat, needle and tease, nurture and comfort one another through the best and worst of times. Despite absentee husbands, or perhaps because of them, the circle of women share the stories of their lives and become as intertwined as the roots of a great tree. Sisters to the end, wise and winsome, the ensemble melds laughter and pain together leaving no dry eye in the house.
The women of “Steel Magnolias” win us over exhibiting the best virtues of true Southern women, sweetness, beauty, charm and strength.
